A new ‘Crafts & Creations’ shop has opened at the iCARE centre in Buncrana in the run-up to Christmas, selling unique festive gifts made by young adults with autism. The shop is an excellent showcase of top quality products made by the young people of iCARE with the help of arts facilitators – and Centre Manager Angela Tourish says it is a real treasure trove for anyone looking for a special gift for friends and family this Christmas. The shop will be open on Mondays and Tuesdays 11am to 3pm and Fridays 2pm to 3pm at the iCARE premises on Looking Glass Brae, Ballymacarry, Buncrana. Ben Grogan is now the all-time scoring leader in Oklahoma State football history. More points than Barry Sanders. More than Thurman Thomas. More than Dan Bailey. Nobody has ever scored more than Grogan who broke Bailey’s record with a field goal against KU on Saturday. He talked after the game about why it was so special.“It’s a pretty great honor to be on that list,” said Grogan. “I looked up to Dan before I even got here just because he was a great kicker. Now I’m up there with him. That’s really cool to me. This is more a long marathon achievement … it’s one of my happier moments here for sure.” His coach Mike Gundy coached the top two (Grogan and Bailey) and played with two of the other top five scorers in school history (Barry and Thurman).“I was happy for Ben Grogan, becoming the all-time leading scorer,” said Gundy. “That’s a great accomplishment for him. He’s a great young man, hard-worker, self-motivated. It’s a great team award, because obviously you have to score a lot or be in the position to score a lot for him to break that record.”If you’re looking for the comments section, it has moved to our forum, The Chamber. 2002College Park, Md.MarylandWNCAAB17~24 After Wisconsin upset Kentucky in the men’s NCAA basketball tournament Saturday night, there was a riot near Kentucky’s campus in Lexington. People threw bottles and set fires, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. The police used pepper spray and arrested 31 people. And this wasn’t the first time people in Lexington reacted violently after a big Wildcats game. Last spring, the police arrested dozens of people after riots when Kentucky lost in the national championship game. And they arrested dozens of people in two separate riots in 2012, after Kentucky’s wins in the national semifinal and final. Those are four of about 50 North American sports riots in the past five decades for which I’ve gathered media-reported data. The database tells a violent history of the aftermath of many sporting events: thousands of people arrested, hundreds injured, more than a dozen killed. The riots occurred in more than a dozen U.S. states and three Canadian provinces, in reaction to sporting events in all four major North American pro sports, plus college football, basketball and hockey. Nearly all the sports riots originated in championship celebrations. Just a handful followed losses for the home team.I put this together after finding no existing, comprehensive database of these events. Our data isn’t comprehensive, either. Among the limitations: Our Nexis and Google searches might not have turned up all media reports. Different jurisdictions and media outlets might use different thresholds in counting, say, injuries and fires. We often found differing counts for the same incident, and some incident reports did not include information on arrests, injuries and deaths (in those cases, we left the fields below blank). The numbers might have changed for some riots after the last media report about them. And some might not have been reported. Please let us know by email or in the comments if we’ve missed any. 2004BostonRed SoxWMLB>141 2014Storrs, Conn.UConnWNCAAB>30 1991ChicagoBullsWNBA>1002 1996ChicagoBullsWNBA650 1984Manhattan, Kan.Kansas St.WNCAAF24>24 1984DetroitTigersWMLB40801 2003OaklandRaidersLNFL>84 1990San Francisco49ersWNFL14 1989San Francisco49ersWNFL~90 2002Columbus, OhioOhio StateWNCAAF>50 1990DetroitPistonsWNBA141hundreds7 2010MontrealCanadiensWNHL252 1998DenverBroncosWNFL2260 1992ChicagoBullsWNBA>1000~190 1985San Francisco49ersWNFL>183 2015Lexington, Ky.KentuckyLNCAAB313 2014Storrs, Conn.UConnWNCAAB26 1995San Francisco49ersWNFL~1803 2001State College, Pa.Penn StateLNCAAB203 1993MontrealCanadiensWNHL115168 2008MontrealCanadiensWNHL160 1997ChicagoBullsWNBA 2012Lexington, Ky.KentuckyWNCAABdozens~20 to hospital 2008State College, Pa.Penn StateWNCAAF00 2002College Park, Md.MarylandWNCAAB2 2001College Park, Md.MarylandLNCAAB1 2014Lexington, Ky.KentuckyLNCAAB3123 2014San FranciscoGiantsWMLB403 1986MontrealCanadiensWNHL28 YEARCITYTEAMW/LLEAGUEARRESTSINJUREDKILLED 2015Columbus, OhioOhio StateWNCAAF<10 1971PittsburghPiratesWMLB100 2002Bloomington, Ind.IndianaLNCAAB4340 2012Lexington, Ky.KentuckyWNCAAB27 1993DallasCowboysWNFL2618 1968DetroitTigersWMLB200 1993ChicagoBullsWNBA6833 2012San FranciscoGiantsWMLB35 1999East Lansing, Mich.Michigan St.LNCAAB132 2010San FranciscoGiantsWMLB>4 2011VancouverCanucksLNHL~100 2000Los AngelesLakersWNBA>11 2006EdmontonOilersWNHL<400 1986Manhattan, Kan.Kansas St.WNCAAF<211 2004BostonPatriotsWNFL2911 1 2002Saint Paul, Minn.MinnesotaWNCAAH20 1996DenverAvalancheWNHL153 1994VancouverCanucksLNHLdozens>200 1982San Francisco49ersWNFL80125

X We often hear Houstonians bemoan the fact that we don’t have more vibrant, comprehensive mass transit. But what can we do about it – besides complain?Well, for one, there’s a task force working on the problem long term – about 25 years ahead, in fact. The High Capacity Transit Task Force is examining a variety of transit service concepts that might be workable for Greater Houston by 2045, when the region’s population is projected to be more than ten million. The task force will present its recommendations at the Transit Policy Council meeting on Friday, Feb. 22, at 9:30 a.m. at 3555 Timmons Lane, 2nd floor, Room B.In the audio above, Houston City Council Member Amanda Edwards talks about the task force, the solutions it’s focusing on, and what she’s hearing from the public concerning its desires for future transportation services. 00:00 /21:22 Share
An international team of researchers has found evidence of an ancient meteorite colliding with ground rock on Earth, producing the highest temperature ever recorded on the planet’s surface. In their paper published in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters, the team describes their findings after studying an impact crater in Canada and how they were able to calculate the temperature for an impact that occurred so many years ago. Citation: Meteorite impact caused the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth’s surface (2017, September 18) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2017-09-meteorite-impact-highest-temperature-earth.html Planetary scientists believe that Earth was bombarded on a regular basis during its formative years—by meteorites and other space rocks. Some of those collisions left behind evidence that is still observable today in the form of craters. One of them is Mistastin Lake crater located in Labrador Canada, which is approximately 28 kilometers across, suggesting that the object that struck the Earth there was large. The researchers dated the collision that caused the crater back to approximately 38 million years ago. Most craters, the researchers note, do not have much if any evidence of the object that caused them—they vaporize on impact. Likewise, most of the material struck by meteors tends to vaporize, as well. Because of this, it has been difficult to learn more about the nature of the space rocks and the conditions that occurred when they struck. One thing scientists do know, however, is that when collisions occur, a lot of energy is released in the form of heat—the question is how much. In this new effort, the researchers found a way to measure the heat produced when the object struck the ground in Canada. In studying the crater, the researchers found evidence of zircon, a common mineral, being changed into cubic zirconia. Prior work with both minerals has shown that temperatures of 2370° C are required for that to take place. Thus, the heat generated by the impact had to have reached at least that temperature. The finding represents the hottest temperature ever found to exist naturally on the surface of the Earth. The researchers note that this is the first time zirconia has ever been used to calculate the heat of an impact and also shows that some rocks can get hotter naturally than has been thought. The Delhi High Court has directed city police to probe whether some of its officers suppressed facts in a case pertaining to identification of a body as that of a murder accused who had jumped bail. The accused had allegedly connived with his family members to show the unidentified body as his own to get him declared dead by Uttar Pradesh Police.A special bench of justices Kailash Gambhir and Sunita Gupta directed the DCP concerned, under whose jurisdiction the Seelampur police station falls, to “carefully go through report of UP police” and file a status report by next date of hearing. It issued the direction after noting that UP Police in its report has said that some officers of Anti Auto Theft Squad of Seelampur police station were “guilty of suppressing the facts in the matter”.“Conduct of all these officers is not above suspicion. It was a very serious issue where a decomposed body of some person came to be identified as that of the appellant.“As per the UP police report the officials here are trying to come in the way of justice. It will not be allowed in this case,” the court said, while issuing the directions to Delhi Police. The bench also made it clear that “the necessary facts shall be fully inquired into and no casual approach will be entertained” and directed that the status report be filed in four weeks. The court was hearing the appeal of Rajbir against his conviction by a trial court here in a murder case. During pendency of his appeal in court, he had obtained bail and then went missing.Despite repeated summons, when the court had failed to get his presence in the appeal case, it had decided to direct the police in Ghaziabad to trace him since he belonged to that district.Later information, through UP Police, was received by the court that the accused is dead. UP Police had said family of the accused had identified the clothes found on the body as those worn by Rajbir. The body was handed over to them and they cremated it and got a death certificate in his name.
